Weight-loss pen

This medicine is authorised for the treatment of diabetes, but is also used for weight loss in adults with a BMI of ≥30 kg/m², or ≥27 kg/m² in combination with at least one weight-related condition. The medicine suppresses appetite and may contribute to weight loss. The active ingredient also helps to lower blood sugar levels when they are elevated.

The medicine is supplied in a pre-filled injection pen. Each pen contains four doses, with one dose injected once a week. The injection can be administered by the patient themselves. The solution is available in strengths ranging from 0.25 mg to 1.0 mg.

The medicine (liquid) comes in a pen. Use this injection pen to inject the medicine just under the skin, in the thigh, stomach or upper arm. Use the injection pen once a week on a fixed day of the week. Make a note of this day of the week in the calendar provided in the pack or on your mobile phone. The time of day or whether you take it with food does not matter, but choose a fixed time to avoid forgetting. You can change your chosen day of the week, provided there are at least three days between two injections.

The starting dose is 0.25 mg per week. After four weeks, the dose is increased to 0.5 mg per week. After at least four weeks on 0.5 mg, the dose may be increased to 1 mg (and possibly later to 2 mg) per week. If a dose is missed, it should be administered within five days. After five days, the dose should be skipped. Thereafter, resume the usual schedule.
